Spiegeltent Opening Night Party
Latin Dance Grooves; Almasala
Venue: The Spiegeltent, Bath Recreation Ground
Doors: 6pm DJ set; 9pm Almasala
Price: Free and then £8 adv; £10 / £8 on door
Info & booking: BF box-office

Come along early for our free Latin Dance Party with DJ Ruben Cordero and AfroCuban demonstration dancers, then grab a ticket for the late show. Almasala fly in from Barcelona for Bath Fringe opening night and are celebrating the release of their latest album Ahora. Singer Paloma Povedano used to perform with acclaimed Nuevo Flamenco band Ojos de Brujo, her new band takes influence from the merging of cultures found in Barcelona today - Latin American, North African and Southern European. Their eclectic Latin sound crosses tanguillos with an arabic flavour; bulería, soleá, rumba and tangos with South American and Jamaican harmonies, palmas and cantejondos with an electronic background. Incorporating dance as well as music and vocals, Almasäla’s stage show is spectacular.

I've travelled to look for work, to mend a broken heart, to be with someone I longed for. I'd travel to visit friends and on the way I'd make new ones, I'd roam because I was curious to see what was around the next corner, sometimes I travelled to follow the warmer weather and migrate... like the birds and the big whales and fishes do".
Rory Mcleod is a one man soulband, poet and storyteller, singing his own unique upbeat dance stories. A modern travelling troubadour using tap shoes, acappella, harmonica, guitar, trombone, spoons, finger cymbals, bandorea, djembe and various percussion instruments.

Cameroonian born Alphonse Daudet Touna has found an outlet for his creativity in Bristol – playing with some of that cities’ finest musicians. He plays a balafon (an African marimba) he made himself, creating a unique style of afro-jazz through a mix of forest rhythms such as Assiko, Bikoutsi, Makouné, Makossa and Bolobo. Helele’s concerts are spontaneous and alive and Alphonses’ songs bring messages of peace, non-violence and anti-racism along with stories of migration and asylum.

Laura And The Tears are a band that are teetering on the edge of success at the moment from what I can see, a bit like Michael Caine and his bus on the cliff edge in Italy. They are getting radio play with their single from Chris Evans and Terry Wogan and it might be a minor hit, it’s what they do after this that is going to be so, so important to them though.

Described in The Independent (UK) as “probably one of the best live bands in the world.” For the last two decades French band Lojo have been mixing influences - combining French chanson and musette, dub reggae, African, Arabic and gypsy flavours with a jazzy and poetic sensibility and coming up with a sound that is “Sweetly strange and bafflingly familiar". Although well respected by their musical peers, Lo’Jo have never been a band that fit neatly into music industry norms, preferring to concentrate their creative and organizational energies on eccentric and challenging events like the Malian Festival in the Desert and consequently being instrumental in bringing Tinariwen and the sound of the Desert Blues to a much wider audience. This is music with space, spice and variety.

Arriving on the back of punk rock and a gymnastic performance on The Old Grey Whistle Test, his first single, the half-spoken love song 'Really Free' soared to number 27 in the UK Singles Chart. It would be his greatest success for some time. However, the song did earn him a five album deal with Polydor Records, who thought he was a punk rather than merely eccentric. His first album, recorded with Wild Willy Barrett, was produced by Pete Townshend.

John Otway currently tours as a solo act; as a duo with Richard Holgarth (also of Eddie and the Hot Rods; and often with his Big Band which includes Murray Torkildsen, Seymour, Adam Batterbee and guest keyboard player Barry Upton.

All the hits, all the moves, all the banter, all the fabness, all the wigs - live! West Country tribute act Sergeant Pepper's Only Dartboard Band show how good The Beatles could have been if they'd just stuck at it.
Plus, an exclusive, so rare it never happens ever, screening of All You Need is Cash, documenting the chart-smashing career of the Prefab Four. Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Neil Innes and some bloke called George Harrison star in a right funny cult classic.

Serbian band we met at the frenetic Ferrara Buskers Festival in Italy (you've got to be stunning to even make an impression among the 200+ acts competing for attention there every night) and brought to Britain by a consortium of festival circuit bands (Hussies, Sausages et al) who thought you should all be treated. Tho' they do a nifty Gipsy Jazz, their main attraction to a Bell / Fringe crowd will be the Serbian music and the strange instruments involved. A truly Fringe experience and an unmissable band.

Telling The Bees

A truly English addition to the blossoming Wyrd Folk movement, TTB hail from Oxford, its canals and wide-ranging music scene - there's a very strong connection between our two cities, and good to see it in action.
Definitively acoustic, with darkly crafted lyrics underpinned by driving mandolin, cinematic strings and haunting English bagpipes. Inspired by English folklore and the politics of protest, their music evokes an England of rustic charm and savage beauty.
